How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone, Windows & Mac
Published: June 1, 2025 · 4 min read
Apple introduced HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) as the default photo format starting with iOS 11. While HEIC offers better compression than JPG, it's not universally supported. Sharing HEIC photos with Windows users, uploading to social media, or using them in certain apps often requires converting to JPG first.
What is HEIC?
HEIC is based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard. It uses modern compression algorithms to store high-quality images at roughly half the file size of JPG. Apple chose it to save storage space on iPhones and iPads.
Method 1: Convert on iPhone
- Open Settings → Photos
- Scroll down and tap "Automatic" under "Transfer to Mac or PC"
- When you transfer photos to a computer via USB, they'll automatically convert to JPG
Method 2: Convert on Windows
- Install the "HEIC Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store (free)
- Right-click the HEIC file → Open with Photos
- Click the three-dot menu → Save as → Choose JPG format
Method 3: Convert on Mac
- Open the HEIC image in Preview
- Go to File → Export
- Select JPEG from the format dropdown and choose quality
- Click Save
Method 4: Use an Online Converter
For quick batch conversions without installing anything, use a browser-based converter like JS-Convert. Simply drag your HEIC files into the converter, and download JPGs instantly. No uploads, no accounts — everything stays on your device.
